SAP Introduces ERP Transition Option To Support Complex Cloud Migrations

Wednesday, February 5, 2025

SAP is set to introduce a new cloud subscription service, SAP ERP, private edition, transition option, in the second quarter of 2025. This offering is designed to support large enterprises with complex SAP ERP installations as they transition to SAP cloud ERP via RISE with SAP.

As businesses approach 2030 and the end of extended maintenance for on-premise SAP ERP systems, the urgency to modernize is growing. Continuing to use legacy ERP systems beyond this period will pose increasing risks, particularly as third-party software like older Java versions lose vendor support. However, SAP recognizes that customers with large-scale, intricate IT landscapes require flexibility in their cloud transition. Some enterprises operate hundreds of SAP ERP systems, making a structured, phased approach essential for their business continuity.

To facilitate this transition, SAP ERP, a private edition, transition option, will offer a cloud subscription centered around SAP ECC, along with dedicated services to assist in the transformation to SAP cloud ERP. It will include patches for security, legal, and software issues to maintain business continuity. Available for purchase starting in 2028, the offering will be active for usage between 2031 and 2033, providing additional time for businesses that need it. SAP is pre-announcing this option to ensure customers with complex landscapes have sufficient time to plan their migration strategies.

This is an additional and non-mandatory offering. Companies that complete their transition before 2030 will not require it. However, for those who need extended support, there are specific conditions. The scope of the offering will be centered around SAP ECC and will not include the full SAP Business Suite 7, which remains available only until 2030. To be eligible, ERP systems must be moved to SAP ERP, private edition, before the end of 2030. The only supported database for this transition option will be SAP HANA and further adjustments will be necessary due to the discontinuation of support for certain third-party technologies. More details on the eligible scope of products and other requirements will be announced later in 2025.

It is important to clarify that this is not an extension of SAP ERP maintenance beyond 2030. For customers running on-premise SAP ERP systems, there are no changes to the announced deadlines. The SAP ERP, private edition, transition option, will come at an expanded fee between 2031 and 2033 compared to a standard ERP cloud subscription before 2031. Due to the complexity of offering such a service, it is specifically targeted at larger enterprises with intricate IT landscapes. More details will be shared when SAP formally launches the offering in Q2 2025 and as the availability-to-purchase date in 2028 approaches.
