SAP has announced the launch of Green Ledger, a carbon emissions tracking solution now available to businesses globally. Designed to integrate seamlessly with existing SAP ERP systems, Green Ledger enables companies to measure greenhouse gas emissions across business units, prepare for sustainability audits, and adopt carbon budgeting practices. The tool aligns with regulatory frameworks like the European Union’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s forthcoming climate risk disclosure rules. Developed in partnership with leading firms including Accenture, Deloitte, EY, and Tata Consulting Services, the solution was piloted by German manufacturer Covestro, focusing on supply chain emissions tracking.
The release of Green Ledger reflects SAP’s broader strategy to enhance sustainability in business operations, complementing its cloud-based S/4HANA ERP system. This move comes amid rising corporate interest in environmental accountability, although sustainability remains a secondary priority for many IT leaders compared to challenges like cybersecurity. A recent report from Paessler GmbH found only 5 percent of global IT leaders consider sustainability a top priority, but growing regulatory pressures and investor demands are keeping environmental initiatives on the agenda.
SAP’s Green Ledger aims to provide companies with reliable, traceable data to improve emissions reporting and enhance corporate transparency. By embedding sustainability into enterprise systems, the tool supports organizations in achieving environmental goals while maintaining operational efficiency. With increasing emphasis on corporate accountability, tools like Green Ledger represent a significant step toward integrating sustainability into the core of business practices.
